IMA Perennial Premiere

Perennial Premiere, IMA's popular spring Greenhouse event, took place Friday, April 18 (Members' Day), through Sunday, April 20. Members will receive a 20 percent discount on all purchases during the event - non-members could receive a 15% discount. The Greenhouse offers hundreds of perennials and annuals, including a wide variety of hostas, native wildflowers, showy shrubs and unusual alpines. Guided garden tours will be offered throughout the weekend, and IMA horticulturists will be on hand to answer your gardening questions.

I had the pleasure of attending this event at the IMA since I was downtown anyways - enjoyed a pleasant walk among the gardens and enjoyed plenty of spring blooms! Didn't buy anything but got plenty of ideas (as if I needed more)!

1. I want/need/must have a magnolia tree!
2. I want/need/must have bleeding heart flowers!

Mom said that she would give us some Bleeding hearts this year. She has a bunch in the back of the yard.

Oh man! I know what you mean about wanting a Magnolia. They're all over NC and I just love them! You guys ever going to come out this way for a visit?

What kind of magnolia are you wanting? I kind of like the tulip magnolias but everyone has one it seems. The star magnolias are my favorite I am thinking. Just lovely flowers. Not much of a fragrance though.

That is great news, Matt! Thank goodness we have family with large gardens who are willing to help us out! We have gotten at least half of our plants from family so far! :) Thank you, Grandma Peggy, Grandma Linda and Sue!

Alisha, Matt and I have been working on some travel plans for this fall. The east coast would be a great road trip! Not sure what exactly is in the works yet - but we hope to get out that way sometime soon! I will be sure to keep you in the loop so we can swing by! ;)

Tina, not sure what kind of magnolia I want. All I know is that they are gorgeous! What kind do you suggest?

Suzyq, The type of magnolia I would recommend would depend upon a few things. How much room do you have in the spot you want to put it? Do you want deciduous or evergreen? How fast do you want it to grow? The sun and shade situation? After considering all of these I could recommend one that may do best. But personally I don't grow any magnolias. I've only seen them in landscapes and this year I am especially fascinated with the Magnolia stellata. It is deciduous and does well in shade. I do like the tulip magnolias but they grow SO big and for the week of bloom, it is not worth it in my opinion giving up that much space. I am not a fan of the evergreen varieties. They suffered so much last year and are messy and big too. Though the Little Gem is a bit smaller. There are lots of choices and I am sure you will find the right one for you.
