Pieces From My Past

One of my favorite things to do when I was younger was to search the field behind my grandmother's house in rural Monon, Indiana for arrowheads - it was great quiet time for me - to just think, dream or imagine - I loved it. And during the process I would actually find some interesting things.

As you can see I found a few arrowheads, a marble of some sort (actually the round marble like thing is a musket ball), and the disk like thing I found at Battleground Creek I like to think is a button off of a uniform or a coin...but it is probably nothing.

I still have my little collections (though I really can't say that I ever stopped - just recently found two snail shells while taking Lola for a walk through woods and had to take them home with me) - I have a jar full of fossils, a jar full of pretty blue stones from a beach, and a great amount seashells of course.

Recently dug my arrowhead collection out when they came up in conversation at work - and when I had some time over Easter weekend to walk the same field I found most of these in.

Oh wow SuzyQ, what a coincidence! What's it called when you wonder about something for several days just out of nowhere and it doesn't seem to make any sense to the situation at hand? Well, anyway, I've been thinking about how cool it would be to find arrowheads or Native American artifacts in the soil around here. Maybe out in the woods or in a cornfield or even more unlikely, my own backyard. Seriously, I'm not making that up.

When I was growing up, my friends' family would go arrowhead hunting all the time and come back with all kinds of treasures. I've never found one, but I would love love love to one day. Your treasure collection is therefore very impressive to me.

I wish I had studied archealogy in college and came back here to do research on Indiana Indians. Wouldn't that be so cool? -Jen :)

It is crazy when things like that happen! :) When I went out looking for arrowheads I would wonder about what the land would have looked like - how life would have been back then - it would be so interesting to know what kind of events took place on the very land I walked on to find those artifacts. I agree that it would be very cool to have studied archeology - it was actually one of the things I thought about getting into when I was younger. Hopefully you find one one day - keep looking! (creeks and plowed fields are where to look) :)

Have you read James Alexander Thom's book, "The Red Heart"? It is the story of Frances Slocum, a little girl kidnapped by the Indians who traveled through Indiana. If you are interested in the Indians that roamed through Indiana, you would probably enjoy this book.

My Dad used to find arrowheads as a kid in southern Indiana, and I have several of those. They are very cool to look at and wonder about the Indians that made them.

I have some Indiana arrowheads as well. And you're right, it is fun to imagine where they came from, what it looked like back then, who made the arrowhead...all those questions.

Great post.
